Dear All,

Maarten Steenhagen, Lecturer in Philosophy at Cambridge, is our guest
speaker this* Thursday 14 June,* 5-7pm, with a talk entitled: *Extending
Perceptual Capacities: Software or Hardware Update?*

* The event will take place at the Alison Richard Building, Room SG2,
5-7pm. *

The talk will address our theme of perception from a philosophical
perspective, and ask the following questions: What happens when we try to
extend our capacities to perceive? Can such extensions ever lead to
genuinely new forms of perception, or do they at best present cunningly
crafted illusions? This paper considers the case of virtual reality
environments, and the way these can be said to extend visual and tactile
experience.

Maarten is a Lecturer in the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of
Cambridge and a Bye-Fellow of Queens’ College. His research focuses on
perception and the mind. In particular, he concentrates on the role of
perceptual media—such as sounds, images, and optical technology. His
articles have covered the experience of sounds, images, and mirror
perception. He has also published on philosophical methodology.

We hope to see you there!
