Dear all,

The next meeting of the Moral Sciences Club will be held on Tuesday 15th May.
We are delighted to welcome Serene Khader (CUNY Graduate Center and
Brooklyn College), who will be giving a paper entitled 'Decolonizing
Universalism: Transnational Feminisms and Political Philosophy'. The
abstract is below:

I argue we can make progress in three contemporary debates about
transnational feminisms by a) clarifying the normative commitments central
to feminism and b) rethinking the role of normative ideals in transnational
political practices. These debates concern the purported tension between
taking seriously critiques of Western imperialism and retaining feminism’s
status as a normative doctrine. Understanding feminism as opposition to
sexist oppression untethers feminism from commitments to controversial
forms of individualism and antitraditionalism. Understanding transnational
feminist praxis as a practice of nonideal justice-enhancement permits a
universalist feminist position that is not monist about the endpoint of
gender justice or the strategies that should be taken to achieve it.

The meeting will be held at 2:30 until 4:15, in the Barbara White Room
at Newnham
College, and will be followed by tea and coffee.

If you would like to have dinner with the speaker in the evening following her
talk at the Moral Sciences Club, please email the secretaries of the club (
mscsecretar...@gmail.com) by midday on Monday.

This dinner is open to anyone who has attended the talk and it will take place
at around 7pm at a location to be determined (those who sign up for dinner
will be notified of the details by email closer to the time).

Best,
--
