Reassessing Responsibility: Why Knowing What One Is Doing Matters

21-22 April 2017

Trinity Hall, Cambridge

Could a knowledge condition of responsibility apply to habitual
behaviours and attitudes as it applies to intentional actions? In light
of phenomena, such as responsible yet unconsciously held attitudes
should knowing what one is doing be reconsidered as an object rather
than condition of responsibility? How would rethinking the role of
knowledge affect understanding that of control, the other standard
condition of responsibility? The workshop will address these and further
questions relevant to whether the knowledge and control conditions on
responsibility for action can be reconciled with an acknowledgement of
the role of habits and dispositions in agency.
