Dear all,

The Moral Sciences Club's next meeting will be held on Tuesday 14th March.
We are delighted to welcome Professor Peter Adamson (LMU), who will be
giving a talk entitled 'Dialectic in Alexander of Aphrodisias' Treatises on
Fate and Providence'. Here is the abstract:

The late ancient Aristotelian, Alexander of Aphrodisias, is known
especially for his commentaries on Aristotle. He also wrote free-standing
treatises on several topics, however, including the two thematically linked
works On Fate and On Providence (the former survives in Greek, the latter
only in a medieval Arabic translation). In this paper, I will argue that
Alexander is deliberately arguing dialectically in these works. Rather than
arguing from Aristotelian first principles, he seeks show that his
(supposedly) Aristotelian account should appeal to a fair-minded neutral
party more than the Stoic determinist theory he rejects. I will also
discuss the differences in approach and intention between the two texts.

The meeting will be held at 2:30 until 4:15, in the Barbara White Room at
Newnham College, and will be followed by tea and coffee.

For those who have not yet paid, there is a yearly membership fee of £7.50
for students and £15 for others, or a one-off fee of £3 (£2 for students).
These can be purchased online at: http://onlinesales.admin.
