Dear all,

The next Women in Philosophy talk is on Monday 20th February, 12-1pm, in
room G.21 of the Faculty of Classics. Everyone is welcome, tea and
coffee will be available from 11:45.

Dr Myrto Hatzimichali - "The Linguistic Interpretation of Aristotle's
Categories"

Among Aristotle’s works, the Categories was the most studied and
commented on from the first century BC to Late Antiquity. Many of the
controversies linked to this text arise from the fact that its
commentators could not agree on what it was actually about. What did
Aristotle divide into ten categories: words, things, or both, including
the concepts that link them? This paper will focus on the view of those
who took it to be about words (Stoics expecting to find a grammatical
theory of parts of speech), and will analyse the responses to this view
as found in later commentators, with particular attention to the use of
grammatical theory even as part of denying any grammatical relevance for
the Categories.

After the talk we will have lunch at the Granta with the speaker. If you
would like to join us, please email Caterina ([email protected]) by Sunday
19th.

We are looking forward to seeing you all there!
Best wishes,
Cate, Elina, Jess and Laura
