Dear all, The Moral Sciences Club's next meeting will be held on Tuesday 25th October. We are delighted to welcome Dr Bernhard Salow (Cambridge), who will be giving a talk entitled 'Biased Information'. Here is the abstract:
Sometimes, an account or report or data set - in general, a body of information - is biased: it presents a skewed picture of its subject matter, e.g. through one-sided coverage or failure to put things into context. But what exactly does it mean for information to be biased? How does it connect with other ways in which information can be imperfect, such as being misleading or incomplete? Can biased information justify beliefs? Can it lead to knowledge? And how does bias in a body of information connect to bias in the process of putting that information together? I will try to answer (some of) these questions. The meeting will be held at 2:30 until 4:15, in the Barbara White Room at Newnham College, and will be followed by tea and coffee. Once again, you'll need to go further up Sidgwick Avenue to reach Newnham porterts' lodge, from where signs will lead you to the venue. For anyone who has not yet paid, there is a yearly membership fee of £7.50 for students and £15 for others, or a one-off fee of £3 (£2 for students).
