Dear all, This Thursday at the Serious Metaphysics Group, Stephen Duxbury will be presenting 'The Reduction of Modality to Essence'. (Abstract below) As usual, 1.00-2.30pm at the philosophy faculty board room. Feel free to bring lunch along.
Best wishes, Li Li Abstract Kit Fine uses his notion of essence as real definition to offer a reduction of modality. Without directly challenging the theory of essence as real definition, or the reduction to modality, I argue that if such a reduction is possible, then it offers no theoretical benefits. I suggest that the reduction offers no theoretical parsimony and, due to Gödellian results about the reduction, that it offers no benefit in making modality easier to understand or work with. -- Li Li Tan PhD (Probationary) in Philosophy St Catharine's College _____________________________________________________ To unsubscribe from the CamPhilEvents mailing list, or change your membership options, please visit the list information page: http://bit.ly/CamPhilEvents List archive: http://bit.ly/CamPhilEventsArchive Please note that CamPhilEvents doesn't accept email attachments.
