Dear All,

The Early Career Philosophy Group is meeting again on Friday at 4pm in the
*Graduate Common Room* at the Philosophy Faculty. This time, Henry Taylor will
be presenting “Properties: Powerful Qualities or Pure Powers… Or Both?”
(abstract below).

Hope to see you there!
Bernhard

Abstract:
In the debate over the nature of properties, 'dispositionalism' has recently
become the norm. This is the view that it is somehow of the nature of
properties that they bestow dispositional powers onto objects that instantiate
them. For example, it is of the nature of the property of fragility that it
bestows the vase with the dispositional power to smash if it is hit with a
hammer. However, there is still much controversy over which version of
dispositionalism should be adopted. Two such versions are the pure powers view,
on which properties are purely and exhaustively dispositional, and the powerful
qualities view, on which properties are dispositional but not ‘purely’
dispositional: they also have a ‘categorical’ or ‘qualitative’ side. In this
paper I argue that the apparent tension between these two views is an illusion:
any plausible version of each view is indistinguishable from any plausible
version of the other. I further argue that realisation of this fact helps to
resolve many of the alleged problems with each position.
