Dear all,
Tomorrow is the last SMG seminar of this term - we will be having Simona Aimar from UCL, who will speak on Disposition Ascriptions as Possibility Ascriptions (abstract below). As usual, 1.00 - 2.30pm at the Philosophy faculty board room. Hope to see you there, Li Li -- ABSTRACT It is often suggested that an account of the truth-conditions of disposition ascriptions - claims such as "the glass is fragile" and "Bill is irascible" - will help us understand dispositions. Yet the standard account of disposition ascriptions, the counterfactual account, is notoriously open to counterexamples. This paper puts forward an alternative view to the standard account. It argues that disposition ascriptions are possibility claims, and that this semantic fact gives us reason to question the distinction between categorical vs dispositional properties. -- Li Li Tan PhD (Probationary) in Philosophy St Catharine's College _____________________________________________________ To unsubscribe from the CamPhilEvents mailing list, or change your membership options, please visit the list information page: http://bit.ly/CamPhilEvents List archive: http://bit.ly/CamPhilEventsArchive Please note that CamPhilEvents doesn't accept email attachments.
