ABSTRACT
This talk looks at two arguments: the Quine-Putnam indispensability
argument for the existence of mathematical entities and Sider's recent
indispensability for the world's having quantificational structure. I
then make a distinction between two types of indispensability agruments:
practical and metaphysical indispensability arguments. With this
distinction in place, it becomes apparent that the original arguments
only get us as far a practical, rather than metaphysical
indispensability.
