Dear all, Samir Okasha (Bristol University) will be speaking at the next meeting of the Moral Sciences Club with a talk titled *Rationality from a Biological Perspective*. The abstract for this is below:
*This talk focuses on the connection between rationality and biological adaptiveness. It has often been suggested that organisms which engage in adaptive behaviour, in the Darwinian sense, count as proto-rational, particularly if they are capable of adjusting their behaviour in response to environmental signals. I examine this idea from two complementary perspectives. The first involves analysing the concept of rationality itself, building on work by A. Kacelnik; the second involves asking whether natural selection will necessarily favour behaviours that qualify as rational when judged by non-biological standards, e.g. conformity to the principles of rational choice theory. I conclude with some critical remarks on G. Gigerenzer’s idea that adaptive considerations should lead us to reject the traditional norms of practical and theoretical rationality.* This meeting will be held tomorrow (Tuesday the 9th) from 2.30 until 4.15 in Sidgwick Hall in Newnham College. The meeting will be followed by tea and coffee in the philosophy faculty. For those who have not yet paid, there is a yearly membership fee of £7.50 for students and £15 for others (alternatively, students can pay a one-off fee for the meeting of £2 and others can pay a one-off fee of £3). These fees can be paid online (at the following link: http://onlinesales.admin.cam.ac.uk/browse/extra_info.asp?compid=1&modid=1&catid=75&prodvarid=87) or in cash on the day.
