Dear all,

Robin Zheng (Cambridge University) will be speaking at the next meeting of
the Moral Sciences Club with a talk titled *Expanding the Moral Repertoire:
Oughts, Ideals, and Appraisals*. The abstract for this is below:

*Philosophical discussions of moral responsibility have overwhelmingly
focused on practices of blame, resentment, and punishment. However, I argue
for the existence of other important forms of critical moral response. I
introduce a new category of what I call “non-appraising responses,” to be
distinguished from “appraisal-based” responses like blame and resentment,
and I provide both moral-theoretical and psychological arguments for this
distinction. I argue that two distinct domains of morality (Ought vs.
Ideal), along with two distinct psychological systems of motivation
(Approach vs. Avoidance), call for these different types of moral
criticism. Non-appraising responses set aside the appraisal function of
blame in favor of its communicative and exhortative functions, and they are
both normatively appropriate and practically effective in a wide range of
circumstances of moral concern.*

This meeting will be held on Tuesday the 2nd from 2.30 until 4.15 in the
Barbara White room (note that this room has recently been changed and the
website has not yet been updated with the new room details but the meeting
will be in the Barbara White room). The meeting will be followed by tea and
coffee in the philosophy faculty.

For those who have not yet paid, there is a yearly membership fee of £7.50
for students and £15 for others (alternatively, students can pay a one-off
fee for the meeting of £2 and others can pay a one-off fee of £3). These
fees can be paid online (at the following link:
http://onlinesales.admin.cam.ac.uk/browse/extra_info.asp?compid=1&modid=1&catid=75&prodvarid=87)
or in cash on the day.

We look forward to seeing many of you there.

Best wishes,
