Dear all, We are very happy to invite you to our first event of the term, taking place today at 5pm at Newnham College, Sidgwick Hall. There will be tea and cake from 4.30.
"Wise old men and wise old women? Tone and bias in philosophical conversation" How should we engage in philosophical conversation? Is how we speak of any significance, or need the philosopher only care about the content of what is said? If the latter, would anyone be excluded from the practice of philosophy, and should we care? Join Prof. M.M. McCabe for a discussion of these and many other questions surrounding the practice of philosophy. Professor M. M. McCabe is Professor Emerita at King's College London, Honorary Professor in Philosophy at University College London and a Bye-Fellow of Newnham College, Cambridge. She was President of the British Philosophical Association between 2009 and 2012, and will be President of the Mind Association in 2016/7. She's delivering the 2016/17 Sather Lectures at Berkeley and is general editor of the Cambridge Studies on the Dialogues of Plato series. She has published widely on all aspects of ancient philosophy, with a special emphasis on Plato and the characteristics of Socratic conversations. This is a meeting organised by the Women in Philosophy network, which works to challenge gender biases within philosophy. There will be tea and cake before the talk and as usual, you are all welcome to join the speaker for dinner after. Best wishes, Ellisif Wasmuth, Magali Krasny and Emily Dyson _____________________________________________________ To unsubscribe from the CamPhilEvents mailing list, or change your membership options, please visit the list information page: http://bit.ly/CamPhilEvents List archive: http://bit.ly/CamPhilEventsArchive Please note that CamPhilEvents doesn't accept email attachments.
