Dear all, Alison Hills (Oxford) will be speaking at the next meeting of the Moral Sciences Club with a talk titled *How to learn from moral experts: towards a social moral epistemology*. The abstract for this talk is below:
*Social epistemology is centrally concerned with learning from experts. The standard model is: the expert asserts that p, the non-experts learn that p by trusting her testimony. Can we learn from moral experts (who have moral knowledge) in the same way? Three formidable issues stand in the way: the credentials problem, the credibility problem and the problem of deference. All of these are problems of trust. So is there a way of learning from experts without trust? I discuss two possibilities: the method of questioning and the use of analogy. Neither requires trust, and so both avoid the three problems in their traditional form. But they appear to be subject to revised versions. I argue that these revised problems are not so serious. I draw conclusions about how moral experts can teach us, how we can learn from them, and how we should think of social epistemology more generally.* The meeting will be held on Tuesday the 1st from 2.30 until 4.15 in the Barbara White room in Newnham College. The meeting will be followed by tea and coffee in the philosophy faculty. For those who have not yet paid, there is a yearly membership fee of £7.50 for students and £15 for others (alternatively, students can pay a one-off fee for the meeting of £2 and others can pay a one-off fee of £3). These fees can be paid online (at the following link: http://onlinesales.admin.cam.ac.uk/browse/extra_info.asp?compid=1&modid=1&catid=75&prodvarid=87) or in cash on the day. We look forward to seeing many of you there.
