Abstract

What speech act you do with your words at time 1 can depend (in part) on
what happens at time 2. It can depend (in part) on what hearers do or
don't do: for example, on hearer's uptake (J.L. Austin), or hearer's
failure to block what you presuppose (David Lewis). This backwards
determination sounds strange, but is a straightforward consequence of
some plausible principles, with ethical as well as metaphysical
significance.
