Dear all

Ian Phillips (Oxford) will be speaking at the next meeting of the Moral
Sciences Club with a talk titled *Unconscious perception reconsidered*. The
abstract for this talk is below:

*According to the same fundamental kind claim (SFK): perception of the same
fundamental kind as ordinary conscious perception can, and does, occur
without consciousness. SFK opposes the traditional and common-sense thought
that perception is a determinate of consciousness. Nevertheless—and despite
large disagreements concerning the fundamental natures of perception and
consciousness—most contemporary philosophers regard SFK as an
incontrovertible empirical datum. Taking as my stalking horse Burge’s
influential understanding of perception as objective sensory representation
by the individual, I examine the textbook case for SFK which he offers.
This appeals to the alleged dissociation of perception and consciousness:
(a) in certain lower animals; (b) in clinical syndromes such as blindsight
and neglect; and (c) in ordinary subjects under conditions of inattention
and masking. I argue that in the absence of tendentious assumptions none of
these considerations warrants belief in SFK. I further suggest that it is
currently unclear what empirical results would do so.*

The meeting will be held on Tuesday the 10th from 2.30 until 4.15 in Sidgwick
Hall in Newnham College. The meeting will be followed by tea and coffee in
the philosophy faculty.

For those who have not yet paid, there is a yearly membership fee of £7.50
for students and £15 for others (alternatively, students can pay a one-off
fee for the meeting of £2 and others can pay a one-off fee of £3). These
fees can be paid online (at the following link:
http://onlinesales.admin.cam.ac.uk/browse/extra_info.asp?compid=1&modid=1&catid=75&prodvarid=87)
or in cash on the day.

We look forward to seeing many of you there.

Best wishes,

Adam Bales and Daisy Dixon
