Dear all, The next meeting of the Serious Metaphysics Group will be on Thursday (the 26th). Luz Christopher Seiberth (Leipzig) will be giving a talk titled 'Method above Metaphysics – Why Sellars is serious about Scientific Realism' (abstract below). As usual, we'll meet from 1:00 - 2:30pm in the Graduate Common Room in the Philosophy Faculty.
Hope to see you there, Georgie Method above Metaphysics – Why Sellars is serious about Scientific Realism If the body of Sellars' work is to live, some say we need cut off its nasty alien appendage—his commitment to scientific realism. What is this anyway, but a doctrine skewing his views on intentionality (McDowell)? I argue that Sellars' commitment to scientific realism results from an important and overlooked method: analogical concept formation. This method is at work in his treatment of language, mind and science. In support, I discuss Sellars' dialectical treatment of what we do in distinguishing observable from unobservable entities, and his claim that theoretical concepts can acquire reporting roles. My reconstruction makes room for the methodological continuity in Sellars' view of the mind's place in nature. -- Georgie Statham PhD Candidate Faculty of Philosophy University of Cambridge _____________________________________________________ To unsubscribe from the CamPhilEvents mailing list, or change your membership options, please visit the list information page: http://bit.ly/CamPhilEvents List archive: http://bit.ly/CamPhilEventsArchive Please note that CamPhilEvents doesn't accept email attachments.
