Dear all, The next meeting of the Moral Sciences Club will be held on Tuesday 2nd December from 2.30pm-4.15pm. Our speaker is Elisabeth Camp (Rutgers) who will be giving a talk entitled "Insinuation, Indirection, and the Conversational Record" (abstract below). The meeting will be held in the Barbara White Room, Newnham College (a map can be found here: http://www.newn.cam.ac.uk/sites/www.newnham.local/uploads/files/About-Newnham/college_map_08.pdf ).
We hope to see you there. Best wishes, Matthew Simpson and Ali Boyle Elisabeth Camp - "Insinuation, Indirection, and the Conversational Record": Most philosophical and linguistic theorizing about communication focuses on cooperative forms of communication. However, much verbal communication involves parties whose interests are not fully aligned, or who do not know their degree of alignment. I argue that insinuation is a form of speaker’s meaning in which speakers communicate without adding what is communicated to the conversational scoreboard, or sometimes even to the common ground. Making sense of the ways in which speakers and hearers manipulate meaning suggests a way to ground the distinction between semantics and pragmatics more firmly in the practice of ordinary speakers and hearers. -- Ali Boyle and Matthew Simpson Secretaries of the Moral Sciences Club Faculty of Philosophy University of Cambridge [email protected] http://www.phil.cam.ac.uk/seminars-phil/seminars-msc _____________________________________________________ To unsubscribe from the CamPhilEvents mailing list, or change your membership options, please visit the list information page: http://bit.ly/CamPhilEvents List archive: http://bit.ly/CamPhilEventsArchive Please note that CamPhilEvents doesn't accept email attachments.
