Dear all, The next meeting of the Moral Sciences Club will be held on Tuesday 21st October, and our speaker is Dr. Craig French (Cambridge), who will give a talk entitled "The Argument from Illusion". An abstract is attached below.
The meeting will begin at the *new time of 2.15pm - note the change from last week*, in the *Sidgwick Hall*, Newnham College (a map can be found here: http://www.newn.cam.ac.uk/sites/www.newnham.local/uploads/files/About-Newnham/college_map_08.pdf ). After the meeting finishes at 4pm, we will return to the philosophy faculty for tea and coffee, and there will be an opportunity for graduate students to meet and talk to the speaker in an informal setting. We warmly invite and encourage all graduate students to make use of this new opportunity. For those who did not attend or pay their subscriptions last week, there is a charge of £7.50 for a year's membership for junior members (undergraduates and graduate students), or £15 for a year's membership for others. For those who do not join there is a £2 charge for one-off attendance at individual meetings for junior members and £3 for others. Best wishes, Mat Simpson and Ali Boyle Craig French - *The Argument From Illusion*: *"The argument from illusion attempts to establish a bold claim: that we are never aware of ordinary material objects in perceptual experience. I consider the canonical form of the argument as present in contemporary expositions. Drawing on joint work I've done with Lee Walters, I'll try to do two things: First, I'll try to show that the argument as typically formulated is logically invalid. Second, I'll try to identify what extra premise is needed to make the argument valid, but argue that various versions of this extra premise are all problematic in one way or another.
