Dear all,
The next Serious Metaphysics Group meeting will be on Wednesday 14th May at 11am-12.30pm. Our speaker will be Jonathan Birch, who will be giving a talk entitled _Punishment, Coordination and the Psychology of Norms_ (abstract below). I hope to see you there. Best wishes, Matthew Simpson Jonathan Birch -_ Punishment, Coordination and the Psychology of Norms_ "Human social life is held together by the psychology of norms: the near-universal capacity to acquire and adhere to the prevailing norms of one's local community, and to recognize and respond to the norm violations of others. But why do humans have this capacity? I criticise the currently popular hypothesis that normative thought is an adaptation for avoiding punishment, and I outline a positive alternative that explains normative thought as an adaptation for maintaining cooperation in the face of coordination failure." -- Matthew Simpson PhD Student in Philosophy University of Cambridge Mail: Robinson College, Cambridge, CB3 9AN _____________________________________________________ To unsubscribe from the CamPhilEvents mailing list, or change your membership options, please visit the list information page: http://bit.ly/CamPhilEvents List archive: http://bit.ly/CamPhilEventsArchive Please note that CamPhilEvents doesn't accept email attachments.
