Dear all,
The first meeting of the SMG will take place on Wednesday 30th April at 11am-12.30pm (please note the time, same as last term), in the philosophy board room. Our speaker is Daniel Gregory (ANU) who will be giving a talk entitled _Inner Speech: Phenomenology, Pragmatics and Imagination _(abstract below). You can find the termcard for this term on our website, at http://www.phil.cam.ac.uk/seminars-phil/SMG. I hope to see many of you there. Best wishes, Matthew Simpson Daniel Gregory - _Inner Speech: Phenomenology, Pragmatics and Imagination_ _Inner speech is, roughly, the activity of consciously speaking to oneself in one's mind. Given its prevalence in most people's experience, it is surprising that it has not received more attention from philosophers of mind. The main contention in this talk will be that there are actually at least two phenomena which are typically designated as inner speech and that these phenomena should be treated distinctly. One of these phenomena is very closely related to external speech; the other is more like a type of imagination. Treating the two as one, unified phenomenon seriously interferes with properly understanding either._ -- Matthew Simpson PhD Student in Philosophy University of Cambridge Mail: Robinson College, Cambridge, CB3 9AN
