Dear all, This week's meeting of the Serious Metaphysics Group will be held on Wednesday 20th November between 5.30-7.00pm. This week's speaker is Shyane Siriwardena, who will be giving a talk entitled "On the Agency Theory of Causation: Problem Cases for the Genealogical Story" (abstract below).
Hope to see you all there! Best wishes, Matthew Simpson Shyane Siriwardena "On the Agency Theory of Causation: Problem Cases for the Genealogical Story" "The agency theory of causation, as argued for by Huw Price (1991, 1993 (with P. Menzies), 2007, forthcoming), purports to tell a genealogical story about our concept of causation. However, as I will show, the story told does not adequately explain the concept of causation we in fact employ. More precisely, the Pricean genealogical story cannot account for our use of causal concepts with respect to several problem cases that I will present. Thus, I will argue, the agency theory fails to meet its own goals, viz. explaining how creatures like us could come to engage in the practice of causal reasoning that we in fact exhibit." -- Matthew Simpson PhD Student in Philosophy University of Cambridge Mail: Robinson College, Cambridge, CB3 9AN _____________________________________________________ To unsubscribe from the CamPhilEvents mailing list, or change your membership options, please visit the list information page: http://bit.ly/CamPhilEvents List archive: http://bit.ly/CamPhilEventsArchive
