Dear all,
A friendly reminder that Raj Patel (HPS) will be presenting at this week’s HPS
Philosophy Workshop, Wednesday the 13th at 5pm in Seminar Room 1. The title of
his paper is 'Ontic Structural Realism and Economics: The Unwanted Gift’.
Abstract: Psychological content is making its way into economic modeling with
promising new research programmes such as behavioural economics. But stalwarts
of the 'minimalist programme' in economics argue that these new programmes are
misguided and that economics should be kept separate from other disciplines.
Economist Don Ross has recently mounted a scholarly defense of the minimalist
programme inspired by a view in the philosophy of science called ontic
structural realism (OSR). This paper criticizes the application of OSR to
economics and argues that economics should keep its interdisciplinary doors
open.
If you would like a copy of the reading, please let me know.
The HPS Philosophy Workshop is a casual, friendly venue for presenting
work-in-progress drafts of essays, dissertations, thesis chapters and papers,
open to MPhil and PhD students and postdoctorate faculty members to present on
topics in the Philosophy of Science, broadly construed. If you’re interested in
presenting next term, please get in touch!
All the best,
Toby Bryant
