Dear all,

After last week’s hiccup, I’m happy to confirm that HPS Philosophy Workshop
will be returning next Wednesday, the 13th of November, in the usual place and
time: 5pm in the HPS Department, Seminar Room 1.

Next week, Raj Patel (HPS) will be presenting work titled: 'Ontic Structural
Realism and Economics: The Unwanted Gift’.

Abstract: Psychological content is making its way into economic modeling with
promising new research programmes such as behavioural economics. But stalwarts
of the 'minimalist programme' in economics argue that these new programmes are
misguided and that economics should be kept separate from other disciplines.
Economist Don Ross has recently mounted a scholarly defense of the minimalist
programme inspired by a view in the philosophy of science called ontic
structural realism (OSR). This paper criticizes the application of OSR to
economics and argues that economics should keep its interdisciplinary doors
open.

Please e-mail me if you would like a copy of the reading, which I hope to be
able to send out early next week.

The HPS Philosophy Workshop is a laid-back and friendly discussion group, where
postgraduate students and postdoctorate faculty members can share draft essays,
dissertations, thesis chapters, or papers. We meet fortnightly in the HPS
Department, and any draft material for discussion is circulated shortly before
the session. It’s a great opportunity to get feedback on your arguments.

If you would like to present at the HPS Philosophy Workshop, please get in
touch. It’s never too early to start thinking about next term!

Best,
Toby Bryant
