Dear all,

Please join us for the CamPoS (Cambridge Philosophy of Science) seminar

Wednesday 29th 1-2:30pm in HPS Seminar Room 2.

Robert Northcott (Birkbeck) will give a talk entitled "Armchair Science", a
change from the previously advertised title, and joint work with Anna
Alexandrova. The abstract is below.

Best wishes,

Christopher

Abstract: We define the notion of *armchair science* – roughly, a
concentration on the development of idealized theory with only a loose
relation to possible empirical application, and in particular with no
specific real-world target in mind. We argue that in many fields there is
rather too much of it. Philosophy of science should be at the forefront of
highlighting this widespread problem, and proposing solutions to it. Yet,
for a couple of reasons, existing philosophical work on modelling has
fallen short in this critical role.****
