Dear all, This Tuesday, 22nd of October, Brandon Fitelson (Rutgers University) will be giving a talk entitled "Accuracy, Coherence and Evidence". An abstract and draft of the paper is provided below.
The talk will take place in the Boys Smith Room in the Fisher Building of St. John's College, beginning at 17:15. The speaker will present their paper between 30 and 45mins and a discussion will follow until 7pm. Best wishes, Kyle and Shyane ABSTRACT: In this paper, we introduce a unified framework for grounding formal, epistemic coherence requirements (this framework is a generalization of an argument used by de Finetti & Joyce to ground probabilism as a formal coherence requirement for credences). We show how the application of this framework to full belief leads to an attractive new family of coherence requirements. We then explain why we think these new requirements for full belief are superior to deductive consistency. Along the way, some applications to well-known paradoxes of consistency (e.g, the lottery and the preface) will be highlighted. This is joint work with Kenny Easwaran.
