Dear all, This is a reminder that today Kyle Mitchell will give a talk entitled "Pragmatism, Joint-Carving and Ontology" (abstract below).
We will meet in the Faculty Board Room at 5:30. I hope to see many of you there. All the best, Lukas ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Pragmatism, Joint-Carving and Ontology The idea that ontological questions have metaphysically substantive answers has come under attack from ontological deflationists. Recently, Ted Sider has tried to vindicate a way to do substantive ontology by appealing to notions like "joint-carving", "naturalness" and "structure". In this talk, I will use the debate between Sider and ontological deflationists to sketch out my own version of deflationism (which I prefer to call ontological pragmatism). I then defend the view against Sider's objections and hint at some reasons to prefer my own view to Sider's.
