Dear All,

Next Tuesday (25th), Claire Benn, from the Univeristy of Cambridge, will
give a talk entitled 'Supererogatory Acts: Optional and Good'. An abstract
is attached below.

The meeting will start at 5.15pm and will be held in the Fisher Building of
St. John's College in either the Boys Smith Room, the Dirac Room, or the
Castlereagh Room.

As usual, the speaker will present for no longer than 45 minutes, followed
by a discussion until 7.00pm.

If you would like to join Claire for dinner after the talk, then please let

There are two core notions at the heart of the concept of
supererogation: optionality and goodness. Despite the fact that these two
aspects are central to any account of supererogation, few theorists go
beyond a very general understanding of them. I flesh out these notions
further, specifying exactly what should be meant by the two conditions of
optionality and goodness that actions must meet in order to be
supererogatory. While the conditions I outline might at first seem
unnecessarily complex, I argue that this complexity is in fact necessary in
light of the failure of more simplistic characterisations. Developing a more
detailed account of these two conditions is important because without it the
nature and value of supererogatory actions cannot be fully understood.
