Dear all,

The new CamPoS (Cambridge Philosophy of Science) seminar series continues
this Wednesday, 24 October, 1-2:30pm in HPS Seminar Room 2. Sally Riordan
(Stanford University), will give a talk entitled "The Meaning of
'Kilogram'". The abstract is below.

All are very welcome, and we hope to see many of you there.

Best wishes,
Vashka

Since its conception during the French Revolution, the kilogram has been
variously defined, by the mass of water, using ratios to the old French
pound, and by platinum cylinders. Its definition is about to change again:
the kilogram will be defined by fixing Planck's constant. I'll be asking
whether these changes can tell us anything about the meaning of 'kilogram'
(and even 'mass'), arguing that metrological history demands a nuanced
mixture of realist and operational views about meaning.
