Dear all,

This Wednesday at the HPS Philosophy Workshop, Simon Friederich (Wuppertal
University) will give a talk entitled "The paradoxes of quantum theory:
solving vs. dissolving".

As usual, the meeting takes place 1-2pm, in Seminar Room 1 in the
Department of History and Philosophy of Science, Free School Lane. All are
welcome.

Abstract: The paradoxes of measurement and non-locality are widely regarded
as the most important difficulties in the foundations of quantum theory. In
this talk, I first give an introduction to these paradoxes by explaining
how they arise in a standard reading of the quantum theoretical formalism.
I then classify the responses to them which interpreters have developed as
solutions on the one hand---rejecting one of the assumptions required to
derive the paradoxes as wrong---and dissolutions on the other---rejecting
one of these assumptions as being based on mistaken conceptual
presuppositions. An example of an account which aims at a dissolution in
that sense is outlined and discussed.

Best wishes,
Vashka
