Hi,

which is your distribution?
In anycase, as pointed in the download page, preferred way in linux to install 
the vm is through openbuildservice:

https://software.opensuse.org/download.html?project=devel:languages:pharo:latest&package=pharo9-ui
can you try one of that and tell us if problem remains?
