Jeff, You could have a look at SmalltalkImage>>#addToShutDownList: and SmalltalkImage>>#addToStartUpList: to stop/(re)start the connection when image is closed or a snapshot is taken. Add a method #startUp: to handle reconnecting. See for example Clipboard>>#startUp:
