Other than PluggableSet, something like Unix's sort and uniq combo would work:

condenseOnFirst: aCollection
| lastSelected |

^ aCollection sorted select: [:each |
        (lastSelected isNil
                or: [lastSelected first ~= each first])
                ifTrue: [
                        lastSelected := each.
                        true]
                ifFalse: [false]]
