As a note of interest, RPM itself is backed by a database, db3. Prior to version 4.x, it was backed by db1. Upgrading between the versions of RPM is simply -- installing db3 and dependenies, upgrade RPM, and run 'rpm --rebuilddb' -- which works most of the time, but there are pathological cases.....
