Oddly, it looks like you only get a null if you use the '->>'
operator. With '->' and a subsequent cast to text, you get the string
"null":

maciek=# select (('{"a":null}'::jsonb)->'a')::text;
 text
------
 null
(1 row)

Is that expected?
