According to a recent Gartner study, Oracle has 48% market share (in other words they are the market leader by a margin of 26%). http://www.gartner.com/press_releases/asset_152619_11.html I am pretty convinced Oracle wouldn't open source their database code. The competition would tear them apart by "reinventing" the Oracle Database.
