There is no SERIAL type in the standard at all. Moreover, standard defines following expression for SEQUENCE GENERATORs:
<next value expression> ::= NEXT VALUE FOR <sequence generator name> Postgres has non-standard equivalent - nextval(<sequence generator name>)...
