This suggests a bug in the backend. There should be a core dump somewhere under $PGDATA (unless resource limits prevent it or your system is configured to put core dumps elsewhere) -- can you use a debugger to get a stack trace from it? What exact version of PostgreSQL are you running and on what operating system?
