BTW,
/usr/share/pgsql/contrib/pgcrypto.sql
is the script that defines the encode and digest functions.

thanks hlk, that's exactly what I was looking for. Now I can create a md5() function and do my job!
encode is a native PG string function, it is not defined in pgcrypto.
