Looks complicated. You can extract 'epoch':
db=# select now() - (now() - interval '1 day');
 ?column?
----------
 1 day
(1 row)

db=# select extract(epoch from (now() - (now() - interval '1 day')));
 date_part
-----------
     86400
(1 row)
