We have "fight" with this kind of stuff and found two directions:
-software RAID 1 with nbd (for nbd you can search http://freshmeat.net
site)
-another toy named drbd (http://www.complang.tuwien.ac.at/reisner/drbd/)
which is much easier in our opinion
