But it is possible to get maximum length of varchar: SELECT atttypmod - 4 FROM pg_attribute WHERE attrelid = 'typedef.BASIC_PEDIGREE'::regclass AND attname = 'DESCRIPTION'; Please note that 4 is an integer which represents length. -- // Dmitriy.
