In SQL I can do:

  PREPARE _p(parent) AS INSERT INTO subtable SELECT ($1).*;
  EXECUTE _p(new);
  DEALLOCATE _p;

however this seems to interact badly with the EXECUTE in plpgsql, not
sure how to work around that.
