The quoting. Use $$-quoting around the function, for instance: create or replace function get_I(text, timestamp, timestamp) returns bigint as $$ select count (*) ... $$ language plpgsql; Now you can use simple ' inside the function. Other, but inferior solution, use ''' instead ' inside the function.
