I looked at BIRT - it is part of Eclipse.  It is pretty new and I found the 
documentation to be pretty limited.  Also, it has few output options.  These 
factors caused me to decide against it.  Settled on JasperReports and like it a 
lot.  It integrated easily with my Java (Eclipse RCP) GUI.  Creating reports 
isn't any harder than Crystal Reports.  In my GUI, I use an xml file for a 
report list, so I can add, edit, and delete reports easily without altering 
program code.
