Answering my own question, looks like res = DatumGetNumeric(DirectFunctionCall3(numeric_in, CStringGetDatum(buf), 0, -1)); should do it, judging from https://api.pgxn.org/src/orafce/orafce-3.6.1/convert.c Geoff
