locale of the database should be de_DE.utf8 (if the database is with encoding UNICODE) or de_DE in case the encoding is LATIN1. check it with show lc_ctype show database_encoding You cannot officially change the locale of the database so theoretically you can buckup and restore the database to the correctly initialized database.
