We will add some dependency recreation stuff for ALTER COLUMN
for 7.3 and 7.4 servers, but probably not more.

So if I upgrade the underlying database from postgreSQL 7.3 to 8.0 I won't have to DROP and re-CREATE tables and/or views so often?

There have been many improvements, adding many ALTER <dbobject> commands in 7.4 and 8.0, makink life a lot easier.
