More on Google Account Recovery Failures
And you might ask, why is Google so unwilling to help these usually
nontechie users trapped in account recovery nightmares? I've discussed
this (quite cordially, I'm always cordial, right?) directly with high
ranking Google employees, and in fact with Googlers there directly
responsible for the development and implementation of these policies.
To use my own words, Google expresses three primary concerns with all
of my ideas to improve the account recovery situation (not in any
particular order).
1) They might cause an increase in bad actors
2) Implementation costs
3) Especially for free users (though I will note the problems also
affect paying users!) they just don't feel that helping them is
worthwhile, relative to the numbers of users who don't have those
problems. The fact that the same nontechnical users who depend on
Google get hit again and again by these policies does not sway the
firm.
I could (and have, many times) explained the fallacies in each of
those arguments. Again, it's like talking to a brick wall, or
actually, more like bashing my head into a brick wall.
But I keep trying. Because I'm stubborn, and still don't know any
better, even after all these years. -L
