I forgot to mention a problem I had with an early OpenSUSE installation
routine which didn't seem to be able to keep its hands off my data
disks. After a few failed attempts to find the correct installation
settings I disconnected the 4 data disks before doing the installation,
which fixed the problem. I then reconnected the disks and edited fstab
accordingly.

The problem may have gone away now (I don't know) but I still routinely
do this for each new installation of OpenSUSE on my server (actually a
fairly rare event) to be sure of keeping my data safe. A messy solution
perhaps but simple and it works for me. Not a professional solution as
sata connectors have a fairly short design life (minimum of 50
insertions; Wikipedia). Disk power connectors also have a limited life.
Of course if someone is prone to being ham-fisted they can break at any
time!

Cheers,

Clive
